Leash Reactivity Training in Oklahoma City

The walk is where it shows up. Another dog. A bike. Someone coming out of a driveway. Your dog hits the end of the leash and the whole block gets loud.

K9Elite is private, in-home dog training for Oklahoma City and the metro. One of our trainers comes to you. The dog stays with you. We coach you on the routes you actually walk, so the skills stay in your hands when the program ends.

This is not a board-and-train drop-off. It is not a dominance speech. It is not “just more socialization.” It is owner coaching for a dog that is over threshold on leash.

Why the leash makes it worse

Leash reactivity is an intense response to a trigger, often another dog. The leash cuts off your dog's options. Overarousal, frustration, fear, not enough distance, or a bad history can make the moment too hard to process. With the right space, your dog can start to think and make a calmer choice.

We work the emotional state and the mechanics — in your neighborhood, on your block, at a distance your dog can still learn.

What we work in the home and on your street

• Space and setup so your dog can think before they explode
• Clear leash handling and a walk that is not a fight
• Check-ins you can repeat when something appears
• Door-to-sidewalk transitions that do not start the session already hot
• A plan for the specific triggers you deal with every week

The method is the ANCHOR System: Accountability, Navigation, Communication, Harmony, Ownership, Relationship. Science-based, built on operant conditioning, LIMA. You are the handler. We make that job clearer.
What progress looks like
Progress on leash reactivity doesn't mean your dog never notices another dog again. It means your dog can see a trigger, stay able to think, and make a calmer choice, and you know how to lead in that moment. We build that at a distance your dog can still learn, on the routes you actually walk, so the walk stops being a fight and becomes something you can both handle.
Whether your dog barks at other dogs, lunges at bikes, or blows up when someone steps out of a driveway, the plan is built around the specific triggers you deal with every week.
A calmer walk starts with an honest evaluation.
How K9Elite Is Different
Most dog training in this country falls into one of two camps. Either the trainer keeps the dog for a few weeks and hands back a "trained" dog with no real plan for the owner — or the trainer gives you a list of tips and sends you home to figure it out.
K9Elite is neither. Board-and-train is saved for special circumstances.
The model is this: in most cases, the dog stays with you, and we coach you. Every session is built around the questions a real dog owner has this week. The skills live in your hands — your timing, your tone, your leash handling, your consistency. By the time the program ends, you don't need a trainer anymore. You have the system.
That's the reason K9Elite exists. We don't want to be your forever trainer. We want to make ourselves unnecessary.
The Methods Behind the Results
Owner Coaching
You do the training. One of our trainers guides it. Every session happens in your home or on a real walk, working through the actual problems your actual dog is bringing to your actual life. The skills get built into your hands, your timing, and your consistency — and they stay there after the program ends.

Operant Conditioning
Everything you do around your dog is either making a behavior more likely or less likely. We'll teach you the mechanics — how to use food, play, attention, and clear, calm feedback so the right thing is easy and the wrong thing is pointless.

LIMA — Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive
We start with the gentlest approach that gets the job done. Training is communication, not intimidation. Every plan is fair, humane and tailored to your dog, and one of our trainers explains all of it at the evaluation.

Leash Leadership
The leash is your line of communication with your dog — not a restraint, not a weapon. We coach you on how to walk with a dog the way a good rider walks with a horse: calm posture, clear signals, no tug-of-war.

Communication and Markers
Yes. No. Free. Name. Sit. These are the five words a dog needs to know first. Most "misbehavior" is miscommunication, and most miscommunication is bad timing. We fix the timing before we fix the dog.

Emotional Understanding
Dogs aren't plotting. They're mammals whose behavior follows their state — over-aroused, shut down, frustrated, scared, curious. We teach you to read your dog's emotional state in real time and lead from there.

The ANCHOR System — Coty Cortez's Proprietary Method
The ANCHOR System is the framework Coty Cortez built over more than fifteen years of hands-on work with dogs across Oklahoma City and the surrounding area. Every K9Elite program, including leash reactivity training, runs on these six pillars.

A — Accountability
The dog's messes aren't the dog's fault — they're the handler's gap. We teach you to take ownership of the environment you set up for the dog, instead of blaming the dog for what you didn't prevent.

N — Navigation
The walk. The kitchen. The front door. The backyard. The dog follows your lead through every space he has access to. We coach how you move through those spaces so the dog learns to move with you.

C — Communication
A marker word for "yes." A release word for "you're done." A recall cue. House manners aren't magic — they're a language, and you build the language before you build the obedience.

H — Harmony
A house where the dog and the people aren't arguing about the couch, the kitchen counter, the kids' toys, or who walks through the door first. Harmony is quiet, and it's the goal from week one.

O — Ownership
One set of rules, applied by every person in the household. The dog doesn't get to play mom against dad, or run one set of rules in the kitchen and a different set in the living room.

R — Relationship
The reason the dog is in your house. Trust on both ends, patience in the middle, and a dog you enjoy having near you — for the rest of his life.
ANCHOR is what you get when you enroll in a K9Elite program. It's not a course you download. It's the way every K9Elite trainer teaches, and it's what makes the results hold.

Meet Coty Cortez
K9Elite is led by Coty Cortez, the founder of the ANCHOR System. Coty has spent more than fifteen years working with dogs in Oklahoma City and the surrounding metro, and built the ANCHOR System because the standard dog-training industry wasn't producing dogs he was willing to live with.
The ANCHOR System is what K9Elite has run on since the day it opened. It's the framework every client — leash reactivity included — works through.

Service area

Private in-home training across the Oklahoma City metro, including OKC, Edmond, Moore, Norman, Yukon, Midwest City, and surrounding cities.
How Programs Start
Every program except Deluxe starts with a $150 in-home evaluation, credited in full toward your chosen program. If your program is $2,800, you pay $2,650 remaining. One of our trainers comes to your home in the Oklahoma City metro, watches how you and your dog interact, and lays out the plan that fits your house, your schedule, and your dog.
After the evaluation, you'll know:
-
What your dog needs to work on first
-
How the program is structured in your home
-
What the timeline looks like
-
What the investment is
That first visit is where the relationship starts, and where the plan gets specific to your dog.

Common questions

Why is my dog reactive on leash?

Leash reactivity is an intense response to a trigger, often another dog. The leash can limit your dog’s options, while overarousal, frustration, fear, distance, or past experiences make the situation too hard to process. With the right space, your dog can begin to think and make calmer choices.

How can I help a fearful dog feel safer?

Start with distance and conditions where your dog can still think, learn, and reconnect with you. The goal is not to force your dog to endure more, but to build calm, repeatable choices through manageable steps and clear owner coaching.

What can anxiety look like in a dog?

Anxiety can show up as scanning, freezing, hiding, whining, or struggling to recover after something feels too hard. We look at the pattern and the setting around the behavior so your dog can get support before they are overwhelmed.

How can I help a hyperactive dog settle?

When a nervous system is already running too hot, a dog may not be able to make a calm choice. We build predictable routines, teach repeatable check-ins, and practice at a level where your dog can recover and learn instead of simply enduring more stimulation.
